After earning his DMD from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (formerly UMDNJ), Dr. Athansios established a successful private practice in New Jersey and continued his advanced specialty training by completing a periodontal residency at Rutgers. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology, reflecting his expertise in complex dental implant procedures and full-arch rehabilitation.
Dr. Athansios is a Fellow of both the American Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), distinctions that demonstrate his commitment to advanced clinical education and excellence in implant dentistry.
Advanced Periodontal & LANAP® Laser Treatment
As a leading Manhattan periodontist, Dr. Athansios is one of a select group of LANAP®-certified clinicians in the country. LANAP® (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is an advanced, minimally invasive laser treatment for gum disease that promotes faster healing, reduced discomfort, and long-term periodontal health. Dr. Athansios has been published and recognized nationally for his contributions to laser dentistry and periodontal therapy.

Dr. Athansios has been honored through colleague and patient-nominated “Top Dentist” awards for his dedication to clinical excellence and compassionate care. He has served for over 10 years on the Board of Trustees, helping advance oral health initiatives throughout New Jersey. He is also the Past President of the Essex County Dental Society and has received Distinguished Service Awards in consecutive years.
In addition to private practice, Dr. Athansios is an Associate Professor at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and serves as Program Director of the Rutgers Maxi Course, one of the nation’s most innovative 10-month continuing education programs in implant dentistry for practicing dentists.
